Damien Hirst

Taken in 1998 in his Studio in Brixton . Previously a garage , it was in the middle of a working scrap yard . This was where the spin paintings were first made . He is photographed standing behind the splash curtain that – semi- protected the rest of the studio from spinning paint .

I photographed him last year in his new studio – a car park in central London. He’s always had a canny eye for a space.
